Recently, I have been working hard every day to build and improve my audio environment.
Hello home theater enthusiasts.
Do you like creating sound environments?
People who are obsessed with music seem to be immersed in all kinds of "sound" sources, from setting up home theater environments to music streaming and record players.
An AV amplifier is an essential item for audio-visual enthusiasts.
AV amplifiers are not only used for home theaters, but are also useful machines that can bring together all kinds of audio sources. And the easiest and most profound audio experience in the AV amplifier industry is the "Dolby Atomos")" is a technology.
Dolby Atmos is a type of surround sound, and is a format in which the sound space is likened to a 360-degree sphere, within which sound moves freely. It is particularly characterized by its vertical spatial expression, providing the viewer with an experience of sound raining down from the ceiling.
Dolby Atmos was primarily used in movie theaters, and has since become known as Dolby Atmos for the home, and has recently been included as a feature in entry-level AV amplifiers as well.
Dolby Atmos is also known as immersive audio, and recently Apple Music's "Spatial Audio" has adopted Dolby Atmos, providing a three-dimensional background music experience on a different level from previous audio. In the future, Dolby Atmos will be used in more and more places, not just home theaters.
Let's build a "real" Dolby Atmos!
Dolby Atmos provides such an amazing sound experience, but if you want to listen to it in the best environment, it actually turns out to be quite a high hurdle.
In addition to the normal surround environment, a real Dolby Atmos experience requires the installation of ceiling speakers.
Of course, it is possible to experience Dolby Atmos to a certain extent by using what are called enabled speakers, but in terms of sound effects it is inferior to the real Dolby Atmos experience achieved in a properly prepared environment.
↓These are enabled speakers recommended by the author.
If you want a truly immersive audio experience, you'll want to try installing ceiling speakers! It's a home theater enthusiast's dream...
So this time, we will introduce the simplest and most cost-effective method."How to install ceiling speakers using a jack-type tension rod"So I would like to introduce you to how to create a real Dolby Atmos home theater environment.
So here we go!
Without it nothing can start
First of all, of course, to build a home theater with Dolby Atmos, you need an AV amplifier that supports it. The one I use is the DENON AV amplifier "AVR-X4700H".
The AVR-X4700H can connect up to 11.1ch speakers, but this can be achieved by adding an external power amplifier, which will be described later. By adding an external power amplifier, you can install four speakers on the ceiling.7.1.4ch (floor surround 7ch, subwoofer 1ch, top speaker 4ch)It is possible to create a surround environment.
↓This is the home theater AV amplifier I use, the AVR-X4700H.
The AVR-X4700H is equipped with an 11.1ch processor,The amplifier only has 9.1 channels, so you need to connect an external power amplifier to provide the additional 2 channels.
If you plan to pre-out the top and rear speaker channels to an external power amplifier, you don't need an expensive amplifier; a cheap Chinese amplifier like the one below will suffice.
↓External power amplifier recommended by the author
The lower-end model, the AVR-X1700H, is a 7.1ch compatible amplifier that allows you to mount two speakers (5.1.2ch) on the ceiling. This model does not require an external power amplifier.

How do I mount Dolby Atmos speakers in the ceiling?
It is said that the effect of Dolby Atmos is maximized by installing speakers in appropriate positions on the ceiling.

However, installing speakers in the ceiling is quite difficult and not realistic.
The person who will be playing an active role this time is the well-known "Tension rodWill be.
You may be wondering if it's dangerous to hang speakers from the ceiling with tension rods, but modern tension rods are very strong and can be used without any risk of injury.Jack TypeIf you use the latest type of tension rod called a "tension rod," it will not budge if installed properly.
It has been three months since I started using it, and I am enjoying the Dolby Atmos experience in my home theater every day.
However, the method I will introduce below is my own personal method, so please use it at your own risk.
In the event of any accidents occurring, the author and Gadget Mania Z will not be held responsible.
What you need to install Dolby Atmos ceiling speakers
First, to create a real Dolby Atmos home theater, you will need the following items:
Below is a list of the products I actually use.
■ Tension rod
This is the tension rod that you actually attach to the ceiling. Since it requires a considerable length, we recommend using a "Jack TypePrepare a tension rod called a "tension rod."
Choose the length that best suits the size of your room.
■Speakers hanging from the ceiling
Next, prepare speakers to hang from the ceiling. These are surround speakers, so they don't need to be too expensive.
Here we will choose a lightweight, compact speaker called ONKYO's D-22XM.
*This is a tension rod, so please take safety into consideration.Lightweight is a priorityPlease choose.
*The D-22XM seems to be out of stock at the moment. Please try looking on Yahoo! Auctions or Mercari.

First, install the tension rod!
Once you have all the above items, you can begin installing the Dolby Atmos ceiling speakers. The most difficult part is installing the tension rods, so it's best to have two people do the work to make it go more smoothly.
This is where you need to put in the effort to create your ideal home theater. It is possible to install it by yourself, but if your room is large, it may be very difficult.

First, attach two jack-type tension rods as shown in the photo above.
The installation location is based on your home theater. So that it becomes an extension of the front speakersPlease install it.
By installing it on the extension line, you can achieve the regular Dolby Atmos layout specified by Dolby. It is very easy to install if you have two stepladders.
In the photo above, the tension rod is extended from the balcony side, but depending on the circumstances of the room, it is also fine to attach it to the side.
What's important is that ultimately your ceiling speakers should be an extension of the front speakers in your home theater system. If you are installing it sideways, simply slide the ceiling speaker to align it.
As for how to install the all-important jack-type tension rod, please refer to the easy-to-understand video below.
If the jack is not attached correctly, the tension rod will easily fall off, so be sure to attach it correctly.
Once the tension rod is properly installed, the next step is to reinforce it as an extra precaution.

As shown in the photo above, attach two sets of "adhesive hooks" above the tension rod, then wrap the "cable ties" around the hooks and tension rod.
The key point here is to wrap the cable tie with some slack, without tightening it too tightly.
If you tighten the cable ties, they will exert a force that lifts the tension rod, actually weakening it.
Please think of the cable ties only as a catcher for the tension rod in case it gets about to fall.
Once you've done this, you're just one step away from creating a real Dolby Atmos home theater environment!
Installing Dolby Atmos ceiling speakers!

Finally, install the Dolby Atmos ceiling speakers.
The speaker used for the installation is the "ONKYO D-22XM". This speaker is very light at 1g each, and has convenient screw holes on the back for ceiling mounting, making it suitable for use as a ceiling speaker for Dolby Atmos.
*You can also purchase it from the Amazon, Rakuten, and Yahoo Shopping links above, but if it's out of stock, I think it's also readily available on Yahoo! Auctions and Mercari.

First, attach the "L-shaped bracket" and "M5 screw" as shown in the photo above.
Make sure to tighten the screws securely.

Next, let's get the wiring done.
Since the "ONKYO D-22XM" has small speaker cable holes, we recommend using a 16 gauge speaker cable.
Furthermore, if you wrap the connected speaker cables around the tension rod, they will not hang loose and will look better.

Once you've finished connecting the speaker wires, put the ring through the tension rod, clamp the L-shaped bracket of the speaker with the ring, align the bolt holes, and then tighten the screws that come with the ring to complete the installation of the ceiling speaker.
Do this for the remaining three.

Now, by installing the ceiling speakers using tension rods, you have completed a real Dolby Atmos home theater environment!
Installing ceiling speakers is no easy feat, but some lightweight speakers and sturdy tension jacks can make it possible.
For the optimal position of the ceiling speakers, refer to the image below and adjust the speaker position by shifting them forward or backward. Since we used four ceiling speakers this time, the top front and top rear positions seem to be ideal.

Once you have finished all the setup, check that the tension rods are not wobbly, and once the position of the ceiling speakers has been decided, perform the automatic sound field setup on your AV amplifier.
In this case, simply set the speaker pre-out setting to "top rear."
Please refer to the image below for how to add a power amplifier with an external pre-out and connect it. In this case, it is a pre-out for the top rear speaker, so just connect the "HEIGHT2" pre-out terminal to the INPUT terminal of the external power amplifier with an RCA cable. *Please connect the speaker cable to the external power amplifier.

The AVR-X4700H also allows you to pre-out the front channels.
In this case, by using a good external power amplifier, you will be able to meet the number of external channels while improving the sound quality of the main front speakers.
It would definitely be worth considering.
This concludes our introduction to how to install ceiling speakers using tension rods!
Not only can you enjoy an overwhelming home theater environment with Dolby Atmos, but the ceiling speaker layout also allows you to enjoy Apple Music's spatial audio with realistic sound effects!
Please try it out on your own system.
