The world is now in the process of completely switching over from USB-A to USB-C charger connectors, but which one are you using?

With USB-C, you can charge at high speed if you use a compatible charger, known as PD charging.

The charger we will introduce this time is the new charger "NovaPort Trio II" from CIO, which has monster specs and will be released today, December 2024, 12. What's more, it is said to be very small.

It also supports PPS charging, the next-generation charging standard, with a powerful 140W, making it truly a charger for a new era.

Who is this charger suitable for?

  • People who want to go nomad with a minimalist style
  • People who want to charge at extremely high speeds and low temperatures using PPS charging
  • Gadget enthusiasts who need a large 140W capacity

Features of "NovaPort Trio II"

  • Powerful charging up to 140W
140wThe output is so amazing that it can supply stable power to devices that consume a lot of power, such as the Macbook Pro 16-inch model (2021 and later) and gaming notebooks. In addition, it can be used not only for devices that require a single wattage,Ample power supply is possible even when connected simultaneously to LCD tablets, smartphones, game consoles, etc.Yes, that's right. I'll explain this in the next section.
  • PD charging compatible
Have you heard of PD charging? It is a charging method made possible by the advent of USB-C.The so-called fast charging refers to PD charging. As we've previously introduced in Gadget Mania Z, the charging speed is very fast. Currently, almost all Android smartphones and tablets support PD charging. Of course, current iPhones and iPads are also compatible.

  • Also supports PPS charging!
AndPPS charging is the latest standard announced in 2017.The voltage can be adjusted in 3.3V increments in the range of 21V to 0.02V. The current can also be flexibly changed according to the device's requirements. This allows for efficient charging without putting a strain on the device's battery. Among current gadgets, the Samsung Galaxy series (e.g. Galaxy S21/S22/S23 series, Galaxy Note series) seems to be PPS compatible, and since it is still a new standard, it is expected to be further improved in the future. The charging speed is also said to exceed PD charging. It's not compatible with iPhone yet. However, if you buy this, you can always welcome a new era, so as a product it has great appeal.

The three carefully crafted "N"s

In addition to the features mentioned above, this charger has three added value features due to the PPS charging function, some of which are related to safety, showing how this gadget is made with the user in mind.

Nova Intelligence
Optimized power distribution

NovaPort Trio II box side

This technology enables efficient power distribution across multiple ports.
It analyzes the charging requirements of connected devices (power consumption, battery level, etc.) in real time and dynamically allocates the necessary power.
For example, if you charge your laptop and smartphone at the same time, it will adjust the charging speed to ensure that each device charges at its optimum speed.

Benefit
  • Prevents your device from being overpowered, preserving battery life.
  • Efficient charging means no energy wasted.
  • Maximize charging speeds even when multiple devices are connected.

NovaEngine
Equipped with double GaN chips

NovaPortTrio II box side opposite side

Equipped with two high-performance chips that use GaN (gallium nitride) technology.
Compared to conventional silicon-based semiconductors, GaN is more efficient and can be made smaller and lighter.
The double chip configuration enables stable supply of higher output (e.g. 140W) and efficient energy management.

Benefit
  • Fast charging: The stable supply of high output improves charging speed.
  • Miniaturization: It is lighter and easier to carry than conventional high-capacity chargers.
  • Efficiency: It has low power loss and maintains high output while suppressing heat generation.

NovaSafety 2.0
Automatic temperature control

NovaPort Trio II box side bottom

The built-in sensor monitors the temperature of the charger and connected devices in real time.
If the temperature rises, the power is automatically adjusted to reduce heat generation.
This improves safety while charging and prevents accidents caused by fire or overheating.

As you can see, it has three strong selling points, making it clear that it is truly an extraordinary charger.

Benefit
  • Security: Avoids problems caused by overheating and short circuits.
  • Battery Protection: Extends your device's battery life by preventing overheating.
  • Stability: Temperature-dependent power control enables sustained, stable charging.

First, let’s look at the package.

NovaPort Trio II appearance

The packaging is white with a vibrant cyan accent color. It seems like a waste to throw away the expensive packaging, which also uses a distinctive color for the product logo.

The size is also very well thought out, and it's hard to imagine that a minimal charger could fit inside it. As with the spiral cable I reviewed last time, I think CIO is good at making packaging. I always think that with packaging, you can immediately tell where they cut corners, so it's rare to find a gadget that makes you think "this is a good thing!" at first glance.

Now let's take a look inside.

Accessories list
NovaPort Trio II has three USB-C ports

The accessories are very simple, which is probably something CIO-san was particular about. There is nothing unnecessary and it is neat and tidy. There are three cards stored compactly: a message card, an instruction manual, and a promotional QR code paper.
I really like that there are no unnecessary booklets included.

The charger itself is slightly smaller than ANKER's 4-port USB-A charger. It is a little heavy.
However, this is only for its size, so it's not so much of a hassle to take it with you on the go. There are three ports, all of which are USB-C.

Pick up the NovaPort Trio II

The NovaPort Trio II is unusually textured for a charger, and feels very nice to the touch.
Compared to a smooth surface, it has an anti-slip effect, making it very easy to hold and sticking to your hand.

Smaller than the ANKER charger

I compared it to the ANKER charger I normally use. The CIO is slightly smaller and thinner. When I actually held it in my hand, the difference was greater than I expected. It is very compact and fits well in my gadget pouch, making it easy to carry even when I'm a nomad.

Actual charging test

Laptop and gadgets

I actually tried charging three devices - an iPhone, a Macbook Pro, and a mobile battery - and measured the charging speed.

iPhone14

iPhone14

First, here is a charging test on my iPhone 14. I tested it by reducing the battery capacity to less than 50% so that trickle charging would not work. Incidentally, all three models I will be measuring from now on support PD charging, but cannot support PPS charging. I will try it again when I get a gadget that supports PPS charging. I started charging right away.

17w

I have a power meter between the charging cord and the charger. It immediately switches to 9V and shows a power supply of about 17W (I could see it go up to 20W for a moment.
This clearly demonstrates the power of fast charging. The iPhone 14 delivers up to 27W of power, so maybe a different cable would give better results.

MacBookPro

Macbook Pro (2016)

Next, we tried charging our editor NAO's MacbookPro (13-inch 2016). It can supply up to 60W of power (when the battery is below 50%), but how does it perform?

48w

The result was 20W at 48V!Visually it went up to 55W.) The performance figures were very satisfactory. You don't need to carry around that heavy, big charger for your Macbook Pro, but if you replace it with the NovaPort Trio II, you can achieve a compact nomad style.
Unfortunately, none of the Apple products support PPS yet, so we have to make do with PD for now. But the 140W spec is enough to power two Macbook Pros from this era at the same time...that's amazing.

mobile battery

mobile battery

Lastly, I have the ELECJET Apollotraveler 5000mAh mobile battery. I've been using this mobile battery for about 2-3 years now, but what do you think?

As a result, it achieved the fastest charging speed we've ever seen, at 20W at 51V!
I never expected the results to be this good...
I watched the charging for a while and saw the indicator on the mobile battery light up rapidly.

51w
