Thinking about it, Apple's original keyboard was hard to type on.

Until now, I had been using Apple's original full-size thin keyboard with a vague feeling of something missing, but I had continued to use it while ignoring my doubts, thinking that this was just how it was.

However, with Amazon's Smile SALE just around the corner, I was thinking...
"The current keyboard is hard to type on..."

For me, the Mac keyboard was the white skeleton Apple keyboard with a deep keystroke. It was replaced at some point with an ultra-thin keyboard with a pantograph, but I didn't like this, and I started making more typos and it became difficult to type.

However, I continued to use it thinking it was genuine, but with the Amazon Smile SALE starting, I started to do some research and wondered if it might be time to buy a new one.

The conditions were that the keystroke should be as deep as possible, that the keystrokes should be moderately tactile, and that the keyboard should be compatible with Macs and have a Japanese layout. Then I came across a mechanical keyboard from a brand called Keychron.

The Keychron C3 Pro is a new product that was just released in July 2024.

The brand itself is still young, Keychron was founded by keyboard enthusiasts in 2017 and is known for its sophisticated design, high customizability, and affordable price range. It is especially popular in the DIY keyboard community and has many fans around the world.

I was attracted by the community aspect of it, and also by the good design (it's not the typical black color) so I decided to buy it.

In conclusion, although there were ups and downs, I am glad I bought this keyboard.

The Keychron C3 Pro is a wired mechanical keyboard with a tenkeyless (87 keys) layout. The main specifications are as follows:

First impression

First, the package.
The C3 Pro is the entry-level model of the Keychron line.
Even though it's an entry-level product, the chic design of the packaging is cool and I have high expectations. It's quite heavy, and I'm excited to see what gadgets are inside.

Keyboard and accessories list.
The keyboard features a sophisticated black and white color scheme and plump, rounded keycaps, and I fell in love with it at first sight.

付属品はMysterious metal fittings that I don't know what they areIt came with a keycap puller, a spare set of Windows keycaps, and an instruction manual. The instruction manual is a bit peculiar, as it is very simple and doesn't explain how to set it up.
From here on, I set up the keyboard myself.

First of all, this keyboard allows you to switch between Windows and Mac layouts with a shortcut.
I thought I could do it quickly using the MAC layout, but it was a complete failure.

Contrary to what is printed on the Apple keyboard, the ⌘ and option keys are assigned in the opposite way. So I can't copy by pressing ⌘+C.
At first, I had a hard time solving this problem and I was stuck.

Also, there is no button to switch between kana and English characters.
This was also confusing because the Apple keyboard has toggle buttons on either side of the space bar.
I'm used to Apple's keyboard layout, so I was confused. I'm sure it's obvious to keyboard lovers, but it's just these two things.

I was able to solve the problem of swapping the ⌘ key and option key by changing the Mac system settings.
When our editor NAO told us to switch between kana and English characters, "Control + Spacebar is not the answer," we tried it and it worked easily. *Until then, we had tried setting it up on the VIA site and the Karabine app, but it didn't work. *The VIA site doesn't have an "English" key, and Karabine didn't work even after we set it up.

I would actually like to be able to convert input using the keys on either side of the space bar like on a Mac keyboard, but I gave up because I thought that would probably be impossible.

It's much thicker than the Apple board.

The key feeling of typing

As for typing, it was very easy and provided a pleasant typing sensation.
It has a light sinking feeling with just the right amount of bounce, giving you good feedback when typing.

The sound is similar to that of wooden keys, with a clunking sound, and there is a little resistance at the bottom of the keys. I chose the brown switch, but those who are sensitive to noise may find the volume bothersome. Our editor NAO also said, "The sound has gotten louder."

Please take a look at the video to see how loud the sound actually is.

I was a bit worried about the tenkeyless design before I bought it, but it didn't bother me that much when I actually used it. I figured that if I wanted a numeric keypad at worst, I could just buy one separately.
I like the clean design of the 80% layout as it is well-balanced.

Above all, it feels so good to type that you'll want to type endlessly.

However, this doesn't mean that my typing speed has increased, and I still type clumsily.

Beautiful illumination and texture of the case

I had heard that the actual texture would be plasticky, so I was prepared for that, but when I saw the actual case, I found that the texture was surprisingly good.It is certainly plasticky, but the delicately embossed body and keytops give it a calm atmosphere and it doesn't feel like a toy.

The font printed on the keytops is also tasteful, and I felt that this keyboard would be a very stylish gadget, even as a designer.

And what really motivates me to use this keyboard is the RGB-changing LED illumination. It's not a necessary feature, but it's not a vulgar glow, so I think it's fine.
If this were a Bluetooth keyboard, it would shut it off immediately.

Summary: Is the Keychron C3 Pro worth buying?

This is my first Keychron keyboard, but I had more trouble setting it up than I thought, which left me with some bad memories. For people who are used to buying keyboards, this isn't a big deal, but for someone like me who is buying a third-party keyboard for the first time, I thought it would have been nice if there had been more explanations in the manual or on the web page to make it easier to use.

If you are a Mac user who can clear that without any problems, I think it is a very well-made keyboard, so I think it is a gadget worth buying. I'm a little interested in what the mid- to high-end models of Keychron are like.
