[2021Early] A few words about the new iMac equipped with M1

New iMac

I'm a little late to the party, but...
This is my first Apple story.

The new iMac was announced the other day.
It's quite different from previous iMacs and comes in seven colors.

Some people may already know this, but the old iMacs were also available in a variety of colors for a while.

Old Mac

↑It's like this.
Is this a revival of that?

I'm also curious about the color, but this time it comes with an M1 chip as expected.
I would like to say a few things about that iMac.

The new iMac is thinner and lighter and comes in seven colors

The new iMac comes in seven colors.
This is a bit of a shock for me, as I never thought the color of an iMac would change.

What's more, it's only 11.5 mm thick.
But I always wonder whether thinness is really necessary for an iMac.
If the hinges were removable and it was a touch screen, I'd understand, but I have a deep love for Apple products, so I'm a bit critical (^_^;)

What I want to evaluate is the weight.
I finally broke through the 5kg barrier.

My iMac 27-inch Late 2012 weighs 9.54 kg, so it's about half the weight.
Since I move my iMac around a lot, I'm a little envious of that.

What is the performance of the M1 chip?

In November 2010, the M11 chip installed in the above three computers was so fast that it easily surpassed previous Intel chips.

The performance of the M1 chip, called "SOC," which combines the CPU, memory, and GPU into a single chip, appears to be the same as that of previous Macs.

To be honest, is there any difference with the Mac mini?

So I'm thinking, wouldn't the Mac mini that was announced last year be fine?
This is where my personal opinion comes in.

Up until now, Macmini, Macbook, and iMac have all been able to thrive due to their different performance levels, but if they all have the same SOC, then I think the cheapest Macmini is fine.
And if you add a 2-inch monitor that costs less than 27 yen, it's probably better value for money than an iMac, right?

I'm having a hard time deciding because I can get the same performance as an iMac for around 10 yen (^_^;)

To be honest, if it was going to be called a desktop, I wanted it to be differentiated in that respect.

But there are good things too

This conversation has turned into a bit of a diss, but it's not all bad.
All things considered, I thought the design was excellent.

As a gadget lover, appearance and gimmicks are important to me.

I thought the design of the hinges in particular was wonderful.
It's also nice that the power cord attaches snugly like MagSafe.

If you're introducing it into your office, it may be worth investing in the new iMac even if it's a little more expensive.

Can it be used for video production?

My job is video production, specifically video production that uses heavy-duty motion graphic CG, so performance is more important than anything else.

The iMac now equipped with the M1 chip should not have any problems in this regard.
Its high performance has been widely featured in online media.

If there's one thing that bothers me, it's that there are only four connection ports.
Moreover, the shape of USB-TYPEC and Thunderbolt makes it very difficult to use...

The rear connectors of the new iMac are two UCB-Cs and two Thunderbolts.

When you're making video, you connect a lot of different devices.
At this point, I feel a little uneasy about having to rely on the hub.

When it comes to ports, the Mac mini is also the clear winner.

If I were to buy a new one, I guess it would be a Mac mini...

But there is still hope

In video production, the CPU is important, but the GPU is also very important these days.
So

  • Buy an iMac for looks
  • GPU: Buy an external GPU system
  • Use a hub to supplement USB devices
  • Both Thunderbolt ports are used for external displays.

I think this configuration will work.
If so, is that a motivating factor for purchasing?

Twitter reaction

How is the M1 iMac being received on Twitter?

It's an overall good atmosphere.
Everyone seems to be very interested in the color variations.

Summary

New iMac

I've been nitpicking a lot, but Apple products are still innovative.
Currently, Apple products equipped with the M1 chip are cutting edge in the PC industry.

That's how fast the M1 chip is.

First of all, the appearance of this iMac has been significantly improved.
The speakers have also been revised and the display has been revamped.

I think this is a model that is definitely worth buying.
...or rather, I think it's an appealing and attractive product.

However, I'll pass on this one this time.
There is no doubt that the "M2" chip will be released in the future with a desktop version in mind.

I don't know if that will be next year or the year after, but I think it'll be in the not-too-distant future.

When that time comes, I'd like to replace the iMac I'm currently using and use it to the fullest.
So for the next few years I'll be working hard on 2012K editing on my current 4 iMac lol
