・Please tell us what prompted you to create “PROPLICA Nichirin Sword (Tanjiro Kamado)” and what your inspiration was.
"BANDAI SPIRITS Collectors Division has previously developed products for adults with a sword theme from anime and special effects works, but we had never produced a replica of a katana. However, we thought we could create a good product by combining the unique beauty of the katana's shape with the appeal of the works, so we came up with this product. It took about a year of development and production before we were able to release it."
-What was the most difficult part of the production?
"It's a reproduction of a 'black blade.' I wanted to pursue realism, but since a Japanese sword with a 'black blade' doesn't actually exist, I couldn't use the color or texture of the real thing as reference.
Just because it's black, painting it in black on plastic makes it look like a wooden sword, far from the beauty of a metal blade. Also, the expressions of the blade change depending on the original work, anime footage, setting materials, etc. that we use as references, so there isn't enough information to make it into a three-dimensional object. So, while also referring to materials on actual swords, we started by thoroughly thinking about what kind of texture and appearance a black sword would have if it really existed.
After much trial and error, we decided to give the peak of the blade as much shine as possible and then apply a clear coat. We added a thin hairline to the tip of the blade along the curve of the blade and then applied a thin metallic coat on top, completing a Nichirin sword that, despite being black, has a metallic sheen depending on the angle. We paid particular attention to the texture, shape, and color of not only the blade, but also the tsuba (guard), habaki, and handle."
- I think one of the highlights is the realism of the black blade, which you said you struggled with, but are there any points in particular that you think should be noted?
"For swords, this is the part between the tsuba and the blade, called the habaki. Die-cast metal is used here, but in regular toys, rust and individual differences occur, so we use plating or colored paint. However, with this Nichirin sword, we deliberately only took measures against rust and painted it with a colorless transparent paint. As a result, when you actually hold the habaki part in your hand, you can feel the unique color and roughness of the metal. It is a small part, but even in real swords, it is an important part that the swordsmith uses to express the individuality of the sword. We pursued a sense of realism without being bound by the conventional wisdom of toys, and the individuality that can only be found in this product is apparent."

- Please tell us why you decided to include two different sets of lines in the product, "Go Tanjiro Mode" and "Demon Slayer Mode."
"Firstly, we thought about what fans would want to do if they got their hands on a Nichirin sword, and we concluded that the number one answer would be, 'I want to become a Demon Slayer and defeat demons!' So we decided to record a 'Demon Slayer Mode' which is a collection of lines from Tanjiro fighting demons. Lines such as 'Kibutsuji Muzan! I won't let you get away! No matter where you go, never! No matter where you go, I won't let you get away!' flow from the sword.
Furthermore, we thought that fans would also want to hear lines that express Tanjiro's positive and stoic personality, so we decided to include a "Go Tanjiro Mode."
